Earle’s Balanced Salt Solution (EBSS) contains the carbohydrate (D-glucose) and inorganic salts.
Hanks’ Balanced Salt Solution (HBSS) contains also inorganic salts and a carbohydrate (D-glucose). Like the other buffers HBSS is a buffering system for cells outside of a nutrient medium and provides cells with water and inorganic ions which are indispensable for cell metabolism. In addition, the solutions make sure that the cells keep their proper osmotic pressure.

Phosphate buffered saline (PBS) is a salty buffer solution which contains sodium chloride, sodium phosphate and in some formulations, potassium chloride and potassium phosphate. It is often used in research to maintain a constant pH.
