Serum is often used as supplement to basal growth medium in cell culture. It provides proteins, low molecular weight nutrients, insoluble components and other compounds necessary for in vitro growth of cells. It also neutralizes or binds toxic components and has a buffering capacity. The most common type of serum is Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS) which has a high nutritional content. Our FBS is obtained from fetuses free of BSE, Foot and Mouth Disease, and other reportable diseases.
