Newborn calf serum (NBCS) is collected from healthy, inspected calves less than 14 days old. In comparing with Fetal Bovine Serum, NBCS contains many similar nutrients but has higher protein levels and contains more immunoglobulins. For many cell cultures it is possible to use NBCS as an alternative to FBS.
